Helping the Environment and Others
We are currently investing in a new refrigeration plant installation. This paves the way for improving Pukka Pies environmental credentials and gives us the potential to further increase our cooling capacity by one third.
Our major new building extension will house a super efficient refrigeration plant and larger cold rooms. The upgrade includes an industry award winning design. The latest technology will increase efficiency while reducing our carbon emissions per unit produced.
Although we delight in this investment increasing the sale of our existing best lines, including our new family pies, we remain focussed on maintaining quality whilst reducing our environmental impact.
Heat will be recovered from the running of the new plant to pre-heat water used for cleaning operations or directed to boilers.
As a company we take looking after the environment very seriously. We have many energy saving schemes in place, and are always on the look out for ways of improving these.
We currently recycle cardboard, paper, shrink-wrap, plastic, foils, tins, scrap metal and ink cartridges. The use of bailers and compactors keep waste collections to a minimum. Of the solid waste generated from our site last year 45.8% was recycled, meaning that more than 180 tonnes were diverted from landfill. Food waste is collected and undergoes a heat treatment process to be used for pet food. In 2009 this process diverted a further 600 tonnes from landfill.
Our staff take an active part in our environmental ethos too and many have joined our cycling to work scheme which benefits their health as well as the environment.
Combined with regular exercise Pukka Pies can be enjoyed as part of a healthy and balanced diet.
Making a difference
Pukka Pies support a variety of charities; we particularly like to encourage sporting activities and healthy pursuits involving young people. Our support is often for smaller organisations/charities where we know our contributions make a difference to people’s lives. We ask that all requests for donations and sponsors are applied for in writing with a brief description of the charity and its work and also its registered charity number. We receive many requests and unfortunately it is not always possible to accommodate them all. However, we try to make a difference as much as we can.
